Product Description

Build an impressive 1:200 scale model of the French heavy cruiser Algérie with this highly detailed Orel 027 card model kit. Supplied on 17 large A3 sheets, the model represents Algérie as she appeared in 1941 and offers extensive detailing, realistic colouring and comprehensive assembly diagrams for experienced card model builders and naval enthusiasts.

Commissioned into the French Navy in 1934, Algérie was the final French heavy cruiser built under the restrictions of the Washington Naval Treaty. Designed within the treaty limit of approximately 10,000 tons standard displacement and armed with 203 mm (8-inch) main guns, she combined substantial firepower with improved armour protection.

After entering service, Algérie operated primarily with French cruiser forces in the Mediterranean and became a flagship of the French cruiser force. During the early stages of the Second World War, she participated in operations searching for the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee. Following Italy's entry into the war in June 1940, Algérie also took part in the French bombardment of Genoa.

Her career came to a dramatic end at Toulon on 27 November 1942. As German forces moved to seize the French fleet, the crews scuttled their own ships rather than allow them to be captured. Algérie was set on fire and destroyed by her crew, with the resulting fires continuing for an extended period.

The Orel 1:200 Algérie depicts the cruiser in her 1941 configuration. With detailed superstructures, armament, deck equipment and authentic naval colouring, this large-format card model is an excellent project for experienced builders looking to add an important French WWII warship to their collection.
