Designed by Georgy Mikhailovich Beriev, the MBR-2 was an important Soviet flying boat developed in the early 1930s. It entered service with Soviet naval aviation and became the first Soviet-designed flying boat to be produced in large numbers. Its relatively simple construction, good seaworthiness and low production cost made it well suited to maritime reconnaissance and patrol duties.
During the Second World War, MBR-2 aircraft served with the Baltic, Black Sea and Northern Fleets, carrying out reconnaissance, patrol, transport, bombing and other operational duties. More than 1,300 aircraft were produced during its production run.
