The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 was a Soviet fighter aircraft developed for high-altitude operations. Its strong performance at altitude made it particularly suitable for intercepting enemy bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. At the beginning of the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the MiG-3 was available in greater numbers than newer fighters such as the Yak-1 and LaGG-3.
Although designed primarily as a high-altitude fighter, the changing nature of air combat over the Eastern Front often forced the MiG-3 to operate at lower altitudes, where its advantages were less pronounced. Nevertheless, it remained an important aircraft during the early years of the war. Approximately 3,178 MiG-3 fighters were produced.
