Product Description:
Build a detailed scale replica of the pioneering American ironclad USS Dictator with this impressive 1:200 scale card model kit from Orel (No. 393).
USS Dictator was an ironclad monitor designed by the famous Swedish-American engineer John Ericsson during the American Civil War. Following the historic Battle of Hampton Roads in March 1862, the United States Navy continued the development of heavily armoured monitor-type warships. Ericsson subsequently designed a much larger vessel intended to combine the monitor concept with improved performance for operations beyond sheltered coastal waters.
USS Dictator was an exceptionally large monitor for its time, displacing around 4,000 tons. She featured the characteristic low freeboard and single rotating gun turret associated with Ericsson's monitor designs, creating one of the most distinctive American warships of the Civil War era.
Commissioned in December 1864, USS Dictator entered service too late to participate in the major naval engagements of the American Civil War. She was placed in reserve in September 1865 before returning to service in 1869. After another period in reserve, Dictator was recommissioned in 1874 during heightened tensions between the United States and Spain. Her naval career eventually ended when she was sold in 1883.
Orel's 1:200 scale USS Dictator offers an unusual and historically fascinating subject for enthusiasts of early ironclads, monitors and American naval history. Despite the relatively compact size of the finished model, the kit has a fairly high level of difficulty and is therefore recommended primarily for experienced card model builders.
The model is supplied as 10 A4 sheets and includes English-language assembly guidance.
