The B-1 and its improved variants became some of the most distinctive French tanks of the early Second World War. Their combination of heavy armour and powerful armament made them formidable opponents during the Battle of France in May–June 1940. Although exceptionally well protected for their time, their effectiveness was limited by factors including complex operation, communications and the tactical situation faced by French forces.
