Feodosia belongs to the series of small passenger vessels developed from the “Rainbow” type, itself an evolution of the earlier “Arcadia” class. These compact passenger boats were designed for local passenger services on rivers and coastal waterways throughout the USSR.

The experimental Rainbow was built at the Astrakhan Shipbuilding Plant, followed by serial production of vessels of this type. Later modernised versions were slightly longer than their predecessors and received a considerably more powerful engine, increasing their speed by approximately two knots.
