Named after the famous German statesman Otto von Bismarck, Fürst Bismarck was designed primarily for overseas service and the protection of German colonial interests in Asia and the Pacific. Although officially classified as an armoured cruiser, her substantial armour and heavy armament gave her characteristics closer to those of a second-class battleship. Unlike typical cruisers, however, she lacked a significant speed advantage over contemporary battleships.

Commissioned into the Imperial German Navy in 1900, Fürst Bismarck spent much of her active career overseas, becoming an important part of Germany’s East Asia Squadron. During World War I, the ageing vessel served in a coastal defence role in the Baltic. From 1915, she was used as a training ship for the engineering school at Kiel and later served as a headquarters vessel. Fürst Bismarck was ultimately withdrawn from service and scrapped in 1920.
