History of the Hercules Tugboat
Built in 1907 for the San Francisco Shipowners and Merchants Tug Company, the Hercules became one of the most capable ocean-going steam tugboats operating on the Pacific Coast.
Throughout her working career she towed sailing ships, barges and heavy cargo between ports on the American West Coast and Hawaii. She also supported the construction of the Panama Canal by transporting equipment across the Pacific.
One of Hercules' most dramatic missions came in 1947, when she helped tow the hull of the former battleship USS Oklahoma from Hawaii to California. During a violent storm the battleship began sinking, and Hercules narrowly escaped being dragged beneath the sea before the towline finally broke free.
Today, Hercules is preserved at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, where visitors can admire one of the finest surviving steam tugboats in the world.
