The Meteor was a highly successful series of high-speed passenger hydrofoils developed in the Soviet Union by the Gorky Central Design Bureau, now based in Nizhny Novgorod. Designed primarily for fast passenger transport along rivers and large inland waterways, the vessels combined impressive speed with good seaworthiness. This also allowed Meteors to operate on some coastal routes.
Introduced during the Soviet era, the Meteor became one of the most recognisable hydrofoil designs in the world. Together with the smaller Raketa, it formed an important part of the USSR's high-speed passenger fleet. More than 400 Meteor-class vessels were produced, with examples operating not only in the Soviet Union but also in several other countries.
This Orel kit represents Meteor-107 from 1974 and provides an interesting modelling subject for enthusiasts of Soviet vessels, hydrofoils, passenger ships and civilian maritime history.
