Product Description

Build an impressive 1:100 scale model of the MV Steve Irwin, the famous former flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, with this highly detailed card model kit from HMV Hamburger Modellbaubogen Verlag.

Designed by Benjamin Fentens, the completed model measures an impressive 595 mm (23.43 inches) long and reproduces the vessel in her 2013 Sea Shepherd colour scheme. The kit has been cleverly designed to suit both beginners and experienced card modellers.

For a straightforward build, the simplified version uses only 103 parts and can be completed relatively quickly. Modellers looking for a greater challenge can add progressively more detail, ultimately creating the complete 767-part version with detailed speedboats, capstan, bollards, radar equipment, crane and numerous deck fittings.

The model features a full hull with display stand, a free-standing helicopter deck, detailed small craft and a particularly impressive extendible crane. All model parts are pre-printed in colour, so painting is not normally required.

The kit contains 24 DIN A4 sheets with model parts and comprehensive illustrated assembly instructions in German and English.

The Story of MV Steve Irwin

The real vessel was built by Hall, Russell & Company in Aberdeen, Scotland, and entered service in 1975 as the fisheries protection vessel FPV Westra.

After leaving government service, the ship eventually became part of the Sea Shepherd fleet and initially operated as Robert Hunter, named after the Canadian environmental activist and Greenpeace co-founder.

On 5 December 2007, shortly before Sea Shepherd's 2007–2008 Antarctic campaign, the vessel was officially renamed Steve Irwin in Melbourne. The new name honoured the Australian wildlife conservationist, who had shared the organisation's interest in protecting whales and marine wildlife.

As Steve Irwin, the vessel became one of Sea Shepherd's best-known ships and participated in numerous campaigns at sea, particularly operations in the Southern Ocean associated with opposition to Japanese whaling.

Her distinctive black hull and dramatic Sea Shepherd markings made the Steve Irwin instantly recognisable and an especially interesting subject for ship modellers.
