The Uragan-class guard ships hold an important place in Soviet naval history. They were among the first major surface warships designed and built by the Soviet Union following the disruption of shipbuilding caused by the Russian Civil War and the difficult post-war period. Although relatively small vessels, they represented an important step in rebuilding Soviet naval construction and went on to serve actively during the Second World War.
