Originally launched in 1769 and rebuilt in 1795 as the world’s first four-deck battleship, this legendary Spanish ship carried an astonishing 140 guns and a crew of over 1,200 men.

Designed by Irish naval architect Matthew Mullan in Havana, the original vessel was constructed from Cuban mahogany, with masts and yards made of Mexican pine. Her massive hull featured outer planking up to 60 cm thick, making her a true floating fortress. Despite her low maneuverability—earning her the nickname El Ponderoso (“The Heavyweight”)—she played a crucial role in major naval conflicts, including the American War of Independence and the Battle of Trafalgar.
