Designed as a powerful armoured warship for the defence of the Mississippi River and surrounding waters, she was intended to become one of the strongest vessels in Confederate service.

Construction progressed slowly due to shortages of materials, machinery and skilled labour. CSS Mississippi was still incomplete when Union forces captured New Orleans in April 1862. Unable to finish or evacuate the vessel, Confederate forces burned her to prevent her from falling into enemy hands.
