The D-3 was a Soviet motor torpedo boat developed before the Second World War and used extensively during the conflict. Compared with the earlier G-5 class, the D-3 offered improved seaworthiness, greater operational range and better conditions for its crew, making it particularly suitable for operations farther from its home base.

D-3 torpedo boats served with the Soviet Navy, including the Northern Fleet, where the first examples were already in service before the German invasion of the Soviet Union. Additional boats joined the fleet during the war and operated alongside other Soviet craft and Allied vessels supplied through Lend-Lease.

One of the D-3's important features was its side-launching torpedo system, which allowed torpedoes to be launched without requiring the boat to maintain the minimum forward speed associated with the stern-launching arrangement of the G-5. The D-3 also featured improved navigation equipment, a usable deck capable of carrying additional personnel and heated essential compartments. Its crew of approximately 8–10 men could therefore remain at sea for longer periods.
