Product Description
Build a highly unusual aircraft from the pioneering years of military aviation with the Kasyanenko KPI-5 Fighter, published by Orel as kit No. 104. This detailed 1:33 scale card model kit recreates the experimental fighter developed by the Kasyanenko brothers during the First World War.
Product Description
The Kasyanenko KPI-5 was an experimental Russian fighter aircraft developed during World War I. Conceived by the Kasyanenko brothers, the aircraft was built in the workshops of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and represented an unconventional attempt to create a fighter with excellent forward visibility for the pilot.
One of the KPI-5's most distinctive features was its streamlined, elongated teardrop-shaped fuselage, tapering to a pointed rear section. The engine arrangement was designed to give the pilot an unobstructed view ahead, particularly important for aiming and firing during aerial combat.
A Browning machine gun was positioned in the nose of the aircraft. The unusual design made the KPI-5 very different from the more conventional tractor-configured fighters appearing during the same period.
Construction of the prototype was completed during the First World War, but testing was delayed until 1917. The aircraft's career proved extremely short. During ground testing at the Syrets airfield on 1 July 1917, the KPI-5 crashed and was badly damaged. Development was abandoned and the fighter never entered series production.
The Orel model reproduces this fascinating experimental aircraft in 1:33 scale and is supplied on 8 A4 sheets. Its unusual fuselage and historical background make it an excellent addition to a collection of WWI aircraft, experimental fighters and early aviation models.
