The M2A1 was an improved version of the M2 Medium Tank and represented an important stage in the development of American armoured vehicles before the United States entered the Second World War. Introduced in 1940, the M2A1 featured a redesigned welded turret similar to that used on the M2A4 light tank, improved armour protection, wider tracks and a more powerful engine.

A total of 94 M2A1 tanks were produced. Although M2-series medium tanks never saw combat, they played an important role as training vehicles and helped provide valuable experience that contributed to the development of later American medium tanks.
