Project 378 was a single-deck, twin-screw icebreaking tug-pusher designed for a wide range of harbour and roadstead duties, including towing and assisting different types of vessels. Despite its compact dimensions, the tug was designed with accommodation and service spaces inside the hull, while the wheelhouse was positioned on the main deck.
One of the most interesting features of the RBT-140 was its ability to operate in icy conditions. The vessel was designed to maintain continuous passage through solid ice approximately 20–25 cm thick and force its way through ice reaching approximately 40–50 cm in thickness.
Its compact dimensions also allowed the vessel to be transported by road or railway platform, making Project 378 a particularly versatile working tug.
